SCHOOL COMMITTEES’ ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the Southland School Committees’ Association was held on Saturday afternoon, tlie president (Mr A. L. McCulloch) presiding over a fair attendance of delegates. The Southland Education Board wrote stating that the deputation from the Association, which was appointed to approacli the Board in Hie matter of school appointments, would he received on Friday next, the alteration in tlie date being owing to the absence from town of members and the secretary op the date that had originally been fixed. — Tlie alteration in the date was agreed to, and the chairman, and Messrs Trotter, Jefcoatc, Prain, Anderson, Sheat and Carroll were appointed to represent the Association. The chairman brought under notice the alleged unfairness of the Board’s action in the matter of leave of absence for teachers. He said that tlie Board’s regulations gave the committees a voice in the appointments made, and the same regulations required that when a teacher required leave of absence, application had to be made first to the headmaster, who brought tlie matter under tlie notice of the committee, tlie latter body forwarding it to tlie Hoard. Teachers had been applying direct to the Board und having their leave granted despite the regulations, which wore ignored. —On the motion of Mr A. Ie 11. Hoyles (Waihopai), and Mr .1. D. Trotter (Woodlands i, it was decided that the deputation that had already been appointed bring this matter before tlie Board also. Tlie subscriptions of country members were raised from 2s 6.1 to 3s annually. The action of the executive in appointing Mr E. C. Smith secretary of the Association at a honorarium of £5 per annum was approved of. The New River Ferry Commit Lee applied for affiliation, which was granted, and the appointment of Mr DugaJd McPherson as delegate agreed to.
