SOUTHLAND CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
THE PATRIOTIC DEMONSTRATION. A HANDSOME RESULT. A general meeting of the Southland Caledonian Society’s Patriotic Demonstration Committee was held in the Municipal Chambers on Friday evening, the president (Mr Andrew Bain) presiding over a large attendance of members. A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the patriotic gathering on New Year’s Day was submitted by the secretary (Mr Forbes). This showed that the demonstration had resulted in a nett profit of £150; which would be slightly augmented by some returns that had still to come in.—lt was decided to pay out the amount in hand to the Southland Patriotic League. Satisfaction was expressed by several speakers with the splendid results that had been achieved, especially after some many previous calls having been made on the public. Praise, particularly, was bestowed on the work done by the ladies, it being recognised that much of tlie success of the demonstration was due to them.—A special vote of thanks was accorded all the ladies who had assisted. Members also expressed their keen appreciation of the action of the Southland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association in granting the Society the free use of their splendid grounds, which greatly added to the attractiveness of the gathering, and a vote of tlianks was psased accordingly. Similar laudatory reference was made to the Mayor and councillors in granting free of charge the Municipal Chambers for tlie holding of meetings; also all the ladies and gentlemen who had generously donated produce, confectionery, flowers, sweets, etc., for sale at the demonstration. —To these, and to all others, who had helped towards making the demonstration the success it undoubtedly was votes of thanks were also accorded.
