Information has been received that the ; present rales of freight on goods shipi pod to or from New Zealand have been ‘ suspended. It is explained that this course of action has been adopted by shipping companies owing to the worldwide demand for tonnage and the uncertainty of loading charters. A representative of one of the shipping com--1 patties explained this evening that having i suspended all existing tariffs the com- ; panics will probably tix the rates of ! freight for each vessel its it comes on to a loading berth. lie remarked that the i condiiions would he virtually the same as in the days of sailing ships, when such : a tiling as a. fixed tariff was unknown.
