COUNTESS ON TRIAL

One hundred witnesses will be called in the trial of the Countess Tiepolo, who last November shot dead her husband’s (Captain Onegalia) orderly, a soldier named Palimanti. The case in its sensational features recalls that of tbe Countess Tarnowsky. The prosecution allege that the countess was intriguing with Palimanti (aged 21) and loaded him with presents. The countess, who is a great beauty, gave evidence tit at during p period of physical weakness she allowed Palimanti to become too familial-. He seemed to sympathise with her, and she feared to tell her husband. Later she recovered her self-possession, and when Palimanti forced his way into her bedroom she shot him. The Countess Tiepolo is a member of a noble Venetian family. She was arrested at San Bema. She had undergone the cure for epileptic hysteria. The victim was a tall, handsome soldier named PalJmanti • Her wore her medallion portrait, though how bo obtained it was not know. The neighbours heard a revolver shot an Captain Oneglia’s rooms, and the counters, in an excited and dishevelled condition rushed into the corridor, holding a revolver. She declared than Palimanti had twice attempted to embrace her and nearly overpowered her. She seized the revolved- involuntarily. and fired. The countess’s father.
