PORT OF BLUFF. There were no shipping movements at this port yesterday. The local agents for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company have been advised that the liner Zealandic left Capetown on Thursday. 9th inst., en route for Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at the latter port about the Ist May. It Is reported by the Sydney Shipping List that the steamer Verdala. 5550 tons, has been chartered by the Vacuum Oil Company to load case oil at New York for Wellington and other New Zealand ports. Advice has been received that the Commonwealth and Dominion liner Murltai. en route from London to Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports, passed the Cape of (lood Hope on the 3rd inst. The Huddart-Parker liner Ttlverina has always held the reputation of being a fairly fast ship. Her steaming performances between Sydney and Auckland have been most consistent, the distance of 1281 miles being covered in almost every instance in about 3 days IS hours. On the trip completed on Sunday last the Rlverina occupied exactly 3 days IS hours, which represents an average speed of 14 u. knots per hour. The distance from North Cape to Auckland was accomplished at the rate of 16 knots per hour, in 12 hours. This was a very creditable performance. Further efforts are being made in Chile to promote a national mercantile marine by means of state subventions. The lat«»t project which has been laid before the Chamber of Deputies provides for the creation of a national company, with a fleet of at least eight steamers, to work under contract with the Government. The vessels are to he at least 10.000 tons, with a speed of IT sea miles per hour, equipped for carrying freight and passengers, and capable of being Used as naval transports.
