MR RUSSELL. AT WAIMATE.

Mr G. W. Russel), M.P. for Avoij, ad* dressed about three hundred electors Otis evening and had a good hearing. .The address was on the lines of those already given at other centres, and at the conclusion a motion was carried unanimously that thanks be accorded him for lifs address and the hope expressed that the Liberal and Progressive Party under Sir Joseph ’Ward would be returned to power at the coming eietcion.

THE WANGANUI SEAT.

WANGANUI. April 9.

At a largely attended meeting, thoroughly representative of the combined* local branches of the New Zealand Political Reform League, Mr Fred Plranl (chairman of the Wanganui Education Board and ex-M.P.), was unanimously selected to contest the Wanganui seat in the interests of the Reform Party. CANDIDATES AND SEATS. The Hon. A. L. Herdman will again stand for Wellington North, the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher for Wellington Central, and Dr Newman for 'Wellington East. Mr Wright will again contest Wellington South, as a Government candidate, with Mr Hindmarsh, who defeated him three years ago. Mr T. M. Wilford will seek re-election for the HutC Messrs Samuel and Bennington have both announced their candidature in the Reform interest for that seat, but the Government are not committed to either.

Sitting members will be candidates for the following Wellington country seats —Wairarapa, Sir Walter Buchanan; Palmerston North, Mr Buick; Palmerston, Mr Guthrie: Rangitikei, Mr Newman; Masterton, Mr Sykes; Pahiatua ,Mr EScott.

Pastor Joseph Clark, an ex-Baptlst minister, will oppose Mr Poland (Liberal), the sitting member, for Ohinemurl.

Mr Ken. S. Williams, of Tuparoa, i* the accepted Government candidate for the Bay of Plenty electorate, for ■which Mr W. D. S. Mac Donald is the present member.

Mr Dash (Prohibition) and Mr Francis (of Waimate) are already in the field for the Waimate seat, for which Mr P. IT- Smith will not seek re-elec-tion.

Mr W. IT. Field will be the Ministerial candidate for Otakl against Mr Robertson (Labour), the sitting member.

Mr John Duncan has again thrown down the gag© to Mr McCallum for the Walrau seat.

Colonel Hayhtxrst will be the Ministerial candidate for Temuka, for which Mr T. Buxton will not seek re-election. Mr G. M. Thomson will have Mr W. Belcher as his opponent for Dunedin North.

Mr ,T. T. Johnson will oppose Mr Clark for Chalmers. One or two others may probably enter the field later on.

Mr Parker McEinlay. of Benhar, will be the Liberal standard - bearer for Bruce against the Hon. Jas. Allen. The Opposition will not put forward a candidate for the Grey seat. It is understood that Mr R. McNah will contest Hawke’s Bay or no other seat in the Representative Chamber. The name of Mr J. A. Macpherson is mentioned as likely to enter the lists either against Mr E. P. Lee for Oamaru or Mr R. Scott for Otago Central.

It is whispered that an ex-suburban Mayor will be the Ministerial candidate for Dunedin South. There should be an interesting dual between His Worship the Mayor and Mr H. D. Bedford for the Dunedin West seat, for which the Hon. J. A. Millar will not seek reelection.

So far no Opposition candidate ha» * been announced either for Dunedin Central or for Wakatipu. Mr A. W. Hogg will again be the Opposition standard - bearer for Masterton, and Mr W. T. Jennings will again present himself to the electors of Taumaranui.
