SEEKING IMMIGRANTS
LONDON MISTRESSES INDIGNANT. COLONIAL DEPARTMENT METHODS. (Times ana Sydney Bun Services.) : LONDON, March 22. Received March 23, 5.40 p.m. Regarding the complaints Of mistresses against 'immigration circulars addressed to domestics by the New •South Wales and Victorian Immigration Departments, It is officially explained that the Victorian Department is under contract to despatch 15,000 emigrants during 1014. Owing to the • severe winter in Canada possibly immigrants will be chary of going overseas. Canadian figures have fpilen seventy per cent-, as compared with the first two months of 1913, and Australian figures fifty per cent. Circular letters have been addressed to ten per cent. farmers and farm hands In the provinces, and a special letter to cooks and housemaids. In the south western suburbs thousands of circulars have been issued. The New Zealand Department says:— “We never approach anybody already employed and never do any surreptitious touting, being content with 'legitimate advertising.’’
