Nliles. the printer of the Strike Herald, was fined twenty-five pounds or a month’s imprisonment: three others were fined twenty pounds or thraa weeks’ imprisonment. A fifth was acquitted. LABOUR M.P. SENTENCED TO ONE MONTH’S IMPRISONMENT. ■ JOHANNESBURG, January 23. Mr Cresswell. M.P., the Labour leadef, who was arrested on the IGth, lias been sentenced to a month's imprisonment, without hard labour, and ordered to pay a fine of twenty pounds for publishing a pamphlet likely to excite ill-feeling. He was also fined ten pounds, or. in. the alternative, fourteen days’ imprisonment. for attempting to induce men to refrain from working. Cresswell declared tliat. owing to the proclamation of martial law, which forbade the holding of meetings, lie issued the leaflet 'f, stead of giving advice orally. His object was to advise the men as to tha best way of conducting themselves, especially witli a view to preventing public violence. He would always ad\is® men, who had once struck, to stand together and to be loyal to one another. Tlie Prosecutor admitted that there was nothing very infiamatory in the pamphlet, and nfi doubt Cresswell s intent io'x was to advise against violence. The pamphlet, however, was calculated to Induce a continuation of the strike, Cresswcll's sentence will prevent biro, from attending the opening of Parli.ement on the 30th inst. As the prosecu* tion was conducted under martial hj« regulations no appeal is possible.
