A SERIOUS CHARGE,

(Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. February 10 In connection with the charge against Dr. Charles James Russell of having attempted illegally to procure abortion, which was adjourned at last session of the Supreme Court, at the Supreme Court to-day application was made for a further adjournment. His Honour, together with counsel for the accused, and Mr T. W. Stringer, K.G., held a short consultation, and the application for the adjournment was refused. The case will proceed at this session, probably to-mor-«ow. CORNER IN HIDES. WELLINGTON, February 10. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting to-day a complaint was received from the Auckland Tanneries Employees’ Union as to the American methods of allegedly "cornering" the best hides in New Zealand, and suggesting Hint steps should be taken to prevent this, otherwise the leather industry in New Zealand must suffer injury. At a meeting of the Fire Board to-day it was decided to adopt a Duplex system of street fire alarms. It Is expected that the net cost of the first installation will be £IBOO. The system is the invention of Mr Porter, who drives the Fire Board psotor engine.
