THE FARMERS' UNION
SOUTHLAND PROVINCIAL DISTRICT,
The Executive of the New Zealand Fanners' Union for the provincial district of Southland met in Allen's Hall on Friday last, the President (Mr T. W. Foster) presiding. Apologies for nonattendance were received from Messrs TV. Ford, C. S. Stevens, and W. Held. There having been no meeting held since September last, a large amount of correspondence had to be dealt with, and also a good deal of routine business. The Railway District Traffic Manager wrote advising that the General Manager regretted the Inability of the Department to make any deduction in the present rate on gravel.—Received. It was decided to inform branches that the Drainage Act would be referred to the next annual conference for consideration.
The question of increased charges by wool brokers was discussed, and, although no action was taken, the unanimous opinion of the meeting was that the action of the brokers was a onesided one in that such increases should invariably be made without reference to farmers, who had perforce to submit with as good a grace as possible.
