ANIMALS AND SURGERY
A FEW EXPERIENCES. (Special to the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, December 80. Mr W. Gouch, secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, states that in surgical operations performed at the Animals’ Home In Victoria street dogs show much more endurance than is shown by any other animal. A short time ago a tumour as large as an apple was cut out of the back of a bulldog, and it never winced while the operation was being performed by the surgeons. Another dog whose leg was amputated displayed the utmost patience while the skin of the limb was being stitched. In important operations chloroform is always given. Most of the animals come out safely, but some days ago a valuable cat succumbed just after the operation had been completed. On© of Mr Zouch’s most extraordinary experiences was while a cat was being operated upon for an Injured eye. It was strapped to the table, and the two surgeons were bending over it when it uttered a peculiar cry. In an instant another cat which was lying in a box close by leaped out and rushed furiously at the surgeons, both of whom It bit. It then attacked the cal', on the table, j and finally darted in a frenzy out of the i i-oiiiu, I'resenily a motor cyclist I brought in a dog from the country with a broken leg, and a motorist brought | in one that had been Injured by a mo- | tor car. A fairly large number of valuable animals have been left at the home during the holidays while their owners are away. They are taken great care of, and are made quite comfortable In their temporary home.
