A CRICKET SQUABBLE

THE TOUR THAT FELL THROUGH. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 30. As the cable message from Sydney in connection with ,the proposed visit of a New South Wales team to New Zealand Is apt to mislead cricketers as to the cause of the tour falling through, the chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council explained to a Press reporter today that the Council considers it desirable to place the facts before the public. The chairman said that he was requested whilst on a visit to Sydney, to interview the'executive of the New South Wales Cricket Association. It was decided at that interview to ask the New Zealand Council to make an offer to pay all travelling and hotel expenses, and 2s Cd per day per man. This suggestion was carried out, and an offer on those lines was made by the Z. Cornell to (he New South Association. A reply received to that offer was to ,ne effect that 5s per day per man was required. In view of the fact that a strong eleven of well-known players was practically assured the New Zealand Council acceeded to the -♦:uest, though it somewhat upset the inancial arrangements already made. A further request was received from the New South Wales Association for an additional 60 for washing and tips, which the Council could not comply with. Briefly, the New South Wales Executive undoubtedly gave an undertaking that a team would be sent if travelling and hotel expenses and 2s 6d per man per day was offered by the N. Z. Council. Subsequently they requested a further 2s 6d per man per day, and when that was agreed to by the N. Z. Council a demand for a further £6O was made. This the N. Z. Council could not accede to, and very reluctantly abandoned the tour. The additional £6O asked for would have meant that the players would have received £2 12s 6d per week instead of the 35s offered by the Council.
