THE HOLIDAYS

EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS. WHERE PEOPLE WILL GO. The townspeople of Invercargill will have a wide range of selection between various events which they may patronise during th© holidays, and providing the weather is moderately fine, those In search of an enjoyable outing should not have to seek long or go very far afield. On New Year’s Day the Caledonian Sports at Queen’s Park will be the rendezvous of many, while an aquatic carnival to be held at Wallacetown will doubtless atract enthusiasts in the branch of sport represented. TURF FIXTURES. WYXPHAM RACING CLUB. The annual racing fixture of the U'ymlhain H.C. will take place on New Year’s Day. when the sum of £BOO will be disbursed in stakes at the leading one-day meeting of Southland. Good fields are listed to contest the eight events on the programme and as the gathering may be reached by rail from all centres there should be a record attendance. SOUTHLAND R.C. SUMMER MEETING, LEADING SOUTH ISLAND COUNTRY MEETING. A turf fixture likely to attract attention all over the colony will be com-' menced on Thursday next and extend over Friday. This is the summer meet, ing of the Southland R.C., which classes as the most Important gathering of the year outside those held at the metropolitan centres of Dunedin and Christchurch. The club is giving away the large sum of £2400 In stakes, Including the Invercargill Cup of 800 sovs. and some of the best equine performers in the South Island will be included in the field. The course and Its appointments are in excellent order, and as special train arrangements have been made for the homeward journey, country visitors will be able at the conclusion of each afternoon’s sport to connect with their respective outgoing trains from Invercargill. BLUFF REGATTA. On Thursday the Bluff Regatta will probably be the most favoured event and It is expected that, given a fine day, this fixture will attract as large a crowd las it has done in any previous year. There are eighteen events, and prizes totalling £2OB are to be competed for. The largest amount offered as prize money is £3O, which will be taken by the winner of the cutter’s and fishing vessel's race for vessels of 15 tons and over, and £2O Is offered for the senior four-6arded race, which will be competed for in best and best boats. More than ordinary Interest should attach to the latter event, as the result will be taken by many people as an .evidence of the stability of the decision of the judges in a similar event at Riverton last week. How far this may be taken is, of course, purely problematical and It will , have to be remembered that a full week ( has elapsed since the Riverton race, and further that the crews will race In 'best 1 and best boats, whereas they used clin- ; ker boats at Riverton. In these circumstances the result, whatever It may be. will not be taken as a guide to the result at Riverton by oarsmen, but one of the effects of the controversy will be i the stimulation of interest In the senior event. It is ragretable that H.M.S. Cambrian was ordered to leave port bei fore the regatta, as the presence of the cruiser would probably have had its effect upon the attendance. But those 1 who have interest in rowing, sailing, or j motor launch racing will doubtless find ! ample to engage their attention during j the day. I THE PICTURE SHOWS. Both picture theatres will remain open throughout the holidays and some pleasing fare is assured patrons, while on the evening of New Year’s Day ihe Blue Troubadours will open their threenight’s season in Invercargill. BOWLING. The bowling tournament commences this morning, and will be continued daily throughout the week.
