Received Sept. 18, 8.20 p.m. A Socialist demonstration lias been held as a protest against dear food. Forty thousand people marched to Rathanst and violent speeches were delivered demanding the Importation of foreign meat and reduction of the cost of living. The demonstration culminated in rioting, and innumerable windows were smashed, Including those of the. law courts. Tramcars, too, were wrecked. The police and soldiery were stoned; barricades were erected, and furniture from restaurants and schools was piled in the strots and set on fire. Dragoons charged and .dispersed the mob. Towards evening rioting was renewed in the workmen's quarters in Otta Krlng district. The troops fired, killing three and wounding four people severely and eighty slightly. Of the rest 170 were arrested. MUNZCXFADITIES DO GOOD WORK. PARIS, Sept; 17. Cherbourg and other municipalities are buying provisions and reselling, despite pecuniary loss, at market prices of an ordinary year. In a little while they will open municipal stores and a restaurant, where meals will be supplied at cost price without charging the expenses of management.
