SUPREME COURT SITTINGS
(Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, Sept. 18. The Supreme Court half-yearly sessions opened here this morning. Mr Justice Chapman congratulated the district on the absence of sexual offences, and on the fact of the calendar being a comparatively light one. The Grand Jury found no bill in the case of Andy Peterson, alleged forgery. GISBORNE, September 18. At the Supremo Court to-day before Mr Justice Chapman, Alfred Burnicle, alias Pearce, alias Barnicle, was found guilty of assaulting and robbing with violence one Jas. Kannawe. There were fourteen previous convictions against the accused, who was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour and ordered to be detained for four years’ reformative treatment. A case is proceeding in which Geo. Brown. Thomas Hnbgood and Henry Charles Stewart are charged with having entered the dwelling of a widow, Caroline Broadhurst, at night, and demanded food with intent to steal it. Brown is also charged with having assaulted the woman. No hills were returned in the cases or Wm. Priestly, alleged wounding of a cow, and Jas. Kerr Easton, alleged manslaughter.
