THE NEW WAKATIPU STEAMER

PROGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION. ‘ (Special to tho “Times.”) DUNEDIN, September 18. The Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Marine, left Dunedin on his return to Wellington this morning; but, short though his visit was, he took the opportunity of inspecting tho new twin-screw steamer being built by Messrs McGregor and Co. for the Lake Wakatlpu service. The vessel Is well under way and will be ready for service by Easter. It is pleasing to know that she is made in New Zealand, only ventilators and raw material being imported. The new vessel (which will probably be called Earnslaw) will do 15 knots, so that the sea trip between Kingston and Queenstown will be cut down to an hour and a T quarter. The Minister of Marine (who holds a master’s certificate) says that he will be on the bridge and have command of the new vessel on her, maiden trip on the lake. Some 200 hands are employed in Ul9 vessel’s construction. All the framing is finished, also about a fifth of the plating. The forebody will be taken apart the week after next and railed to Kingston, where construction will be completed, and the launching will be from the sarnie site as that which the Mountaineer left 35 years ago.
