BLUFF WATER SUPPLY.
DIPriCI3T.TIES AHEAD. The town of Bluff is faced with tbe “prions problem of bavinc to arrature for a svstoin of wator supply for local roquir' monts in the not. distant I'ntiiri’. Hitherto the source of supply at Bluff lias been from flip rosorvnir bo I ottering to tlio Bluff Harbour Board, but 'bat authority at ils meeting yesterday adopted flip following resolution :--"Tbat tho Camphelltown Borough Council l>e given notice that at tho end of two years from date the Board win discontinue the supply of water to consumers in the borough and that it is obliged 'o take this course owing to the increased demand for shippi nip and the iusutfieh-uey of (lie supply.” Subsequent to the passim,' of the foregoing ws'l» t i"n a representative of the Southland Times called or, 'he Mayor (Mr B. A. Niclud) and interviewed tom on the subject. His Worship at once remarked that the Harbour Hoard’s decision was somewhat unexpected, but at (lie same time the Borough Connell bad recognised its possibility and bad given attention to the matter of a sttpplv of water for the future requiremnts of the town. One iilea had been Diat if Invercargill. as originally proposed, bad secured a supply from Pipton. an arrangement might liave been entered into for the same source of supply to have been extended to Bluff, but of course that scheme had fallen through. The present position of affairs was that most of (lie townspeople were supplied with wafer by tit e Harbour Beard and the withdrawal of the supply, unless an alternative supply was forthcoming. would he seriously felt by residents and more particularly by the hotels and tho freezing works. The Council already possessed a smalt reservoir of its own. situated in the west of the town, which provided water for the septic tanks, but the supply was not only very limited, but was untit for use for drinking purposes. Bluff was in the awkward position of having neither creeks nor rivers, and ho .anticipated that there would he a very great difliculty in providing a water supply system, although fortunately money on easy terms, thanks to recent legislation, would lie advanced liy the Government for any suitable undertaking. In conclusion. His Worship staled that tho Council would probably he willing 'to take over the Harbour Board’s system of supply at a fair valuation if the Board were wiling to to transfer it, and then possibly an increased supply could lie obtained.
