RIVERTON COURT.

POLICE CASES. Four young men, residents of Riverton, were charged by Constable Alathioson with setting off fireworks in a public place on New Year's Eve. They were represented by Air Anderson, who contended that they were not fireworks within tlie meaning of tlie Act. After hearing evidence by Constable Alathieson. His AVorship upheld tlie latter’s contention, viz., that they were within the meaning of tlie Act. In giving judgment lie convicted and fined one 7s, one as. and 7s costs, two others being convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs each. A resident of Thornbury was convicted and fined 10s and costs 7s for drunkenness at the Thornbury Show. A resident of Invercargill was similarly dealt with for drunkenness at the Riverton Athletic Sports. Richard Brodrick was charged by Constable Alathieson with being an idle and disorderly person within the moaning of tlie Act; that lie did on tlie 2S til Dec. last place himself in a public thoroughfare, to wit. the Riverton railway station platform, to beg alms. The defendant was represented by Air Aloffett, who asked for leniency and to give defendant another chance. Constable Mathieson, in reply, said be would like bis AA'orship to take tlie evidence of Constable Flewellyn, who It ad come from Invercargill for that purpose. This being agreed to, tlie latter in his evidence stated that the defendant landed at Riverton on regatta day from dry Invercargill and set out on a boozing expedition. He very soon became intoxicated and was cautioned. He was next seen “sticking” people up, evidently for money, and was again warned by tlie witness in the presence of Constable Mathieson. After numerous other charges being proved against iiim tlie defendant was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on and a prohibition order to be taken out for AA'allace and Awarua. An old resident of Invercargill was charged with being drunk and disorderly gn the 27th Dec. last. Accused pleaded guilty and was fined £2 and costs 7s or 14 days’ imprisonment. Allowed until 3rd February to pay fine. The Town Ranger charged a local resident witli attempting to rescue cattle whilst being conveyed to tlie pound. Convicted and fined 25s and costs. Two other residents for allowing cows to stray weer fined 10s and 7s costs each.
