NUDER CANVAS
The week of instruction for members of the local Territorial Forces terminated yesterday morning. Reveille sounded at 5.30 when a start was immediately made upon clearing the ground. Tents were lowered, refuse collected and burnt and till stores checked by 0.30, the work being carried out expeditiously and quickly under the appointed orderlies, liefore dismissing the O.C. Camp, Major Murphy spoke in glowing terms of the representation made by the foices in all brandies of their duties. He referred especially to the results achieved by the Quartermaster’s (Lieut. Ferguson) Department, the work of the clerical staff, headed by Acting Adjutant Captain Lonnie, and the band under Bandmaster T. Lilhgow. He was gratified at the interest shown by all ranks in the general routine and th.e support accorded him as commanding officer by the O.’sC. companies and the X.C.O. rank generally. lie hoped the lessons taught in the various operations and manoeuvres during the week would not tie overlooked in the future. Companies were then handed over to their commanding officers for dismissal. .Members of the forces on bloc spoke well of the treatment accorded them during the week and generally regret was expressed that the period “Under Canvas” had ended. The thanks of the forces are due to various contributors to the O.M.'s department, the goods supplied being first quality for their purposes and given unsolicited. Tlic Oreti Rifles add an especial word of praise with reference to the liberal supply of dainties provided by their officers and lion, surgeon Ur Crawford. A word of appreciation of the Quartermaster’s Staff is also to be noted from the Awarua Rifles. Many of the local officers will visit Dunedin this morning for the purpose of interviewing MajorGeneral Godley with regard to the changes imminent to the forces.
