GORE NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) . The Mission Services which have been by the Rev. C. de Carteret In Holy Trinity Church during the week have been largely attended and have evidently made a deep Impression on many in the town and district. On Sunday evening the iMissioner addressed , a crowded congregation in the Dominion Hall, fully a thousand people being present, and two-thirds of those remained for the after meeting. To-night (.Monday) thanksgiving service will be held in the Church, the Hissioner leaving for tlie North to-morrow morning. Altogether the Mission is said to have been of great help, not only to members ot Holy Trinity Church but to members of other denominations, and Mr De Carteret is highly pleased with the result of his labours. A meeting of those willing to assist in canvassing on Show Day for the benefit of the local hospital will be held m the Council Chambers this afternoon at 1 o'clock. „ , At the half-yearly meeting of the Gore Lodge of Druids, held on Friday evening. Bra. A. Kroning was elected A.D. Xor the ensuing half-year, and Bro. D. McFarlane was nominated as District President for Southland. During the evening Bro. R. C. Mitchell was presented ' with an easy chair in appreciation of liis services to the Lodge for 2t Magistrate’s Court on Friday the Borough Council proceeded against C. G. Thurston for removing a wooden building from one part of a section to another, which is in the brick area. During the evidence it transpired that the Council itself had been guilty of a similar breach by removing the old wooden Athenaeum in the same street. Hie Magistrate said that lie was of opinion that no offence had been committed, and he dismissed the information with costs against the Council amounting to £2 12s. The refreshment rooms at the Station are now completed and although tenders were duo on the 14th inst., yet the tenderers have not been notified as to the acceptance of one. It is rumoured that the lessee of the Clinton Rooms protested to the Department against the opening of the Gore rooms. Perhaps this lias something to do with the delaying of the acceptance of a tender. The epidemic of diphtheria still continues, two more cases having been reported to the Council last week. The outbreak is still of a mild form. \ treat is in store for Gore theatregoers. Miss Nellie Stewart intends showing here on the 29th inst., in “Sweet Nell of Old Drury,” and no doubt a bumper house will greet her. Entries for the Gore A. and P. Show close on Saturday.
