MR HALL-JONES.

' IMPROVING HEALTH. Under date London, February 1, the correspondent of the "Press" writes;— 1 am glad to say tliat the state of health of Mr Hall-Jonos, who has now been hack in harness for two or three weeks, is more promising than it lias been for some time. With can; and the approach of spring, it is to be hoped that lie will fully regain his strength. During Mr Hall-.lonos’s absence at the seaside. Mr C. Wray Pailiser carried out the work of High Commissioner in the most satisfactory manner, and earned golden opinions for his unfailing courtesy and consideration for the claims of all at a most arduous time. He Ims now, of course, resumed the duties of Secretary to the High Commissioner’s Office. A number of New Zealanders in London were rather pained to read the statements which have appeared in the Xew Zealand Press with regard to Mr Hall-.loncs's supposed retirement. At the time those statements readied England .Mr Ha 11-Jones was gradually recovering from a serious illness, and such suggestions, which are quite without foundation, naturally did not tend to assist his convalescence. In conversation with the High Commissioner, I gathered that he, too, had felt keenly the speculations about his successor. The present state of the High Commissioner’s health encourages the hope that he may he able to complete ids term of office, "which does not expire until the end of 1911.
