RAMABAI’S MISSION

In Ashley’s Hall on Wednesday evening, Miss MacGregor, one of the workers ip India in connection with the Rama.bai Mission, who is now on furlough in New Zealand, lectured on life in India and on the work of the Mission in particular. The lecture was illustrated by a large number of views, descriptive of Indian life and custom, and depicting scenes from the agricultural and other industries of the country. Passing from these subjects Miss MacGregor explained the nature and objects of Ramabai’s Mukti Mission, and showed a number of views of the Mission Home, The address was followed with interest by the very considerable audience that had come together to hear the Missionary. The Mukti Mission is a purely undenominational evangelical Christian Mission, designed to reach and help high caste Hindu widows, deserted wives and orphans from all parts of India. It aims at training the young girls and women sheltered in Mukti Home, mentally, morally, and spiritually. Everything is done to enlighten the women and girls who come to this Home. After receiving a thorough training for some years, they go out as teachers or Bible women to work in different missions, and many of them get married and settle happily in their own homes. The far-reaching issues of the work now being carried on at Mukti was recently borne witness to by an Indian anti-Christian journal in an article.calling attention to the fact that the neglect by wealthy natives of the needs of the widow and orphans is tending to the Christianlsation of India. It says:- 4 “Do not think that Ramabai has carried away only 1700 girls whom the nation did not want much; she has laid the foundation of 1700 new Christian families.”

Miss MacGregor left Invercargill yesterday for the North. In connection with tho Mission it may be mentioned that early in April Mrs Geo. McKenzie, of Queenstown, will hold a sale of Oriental and other work for the benefit of the Mission Funds.
