Research Scholarships

MS HOCrBEN EXPLAINS. Per United Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 2.9. Mr G. Hogben r Inspector-General of Schools, is at present in Auckland for the purpose of meeting the Research Scholarship Boardff. As a result of his visit a research scholarship will be offered at once, and for it anyone Qualified in the Auckland University district may enter. The object of the scholarship is to deal with subjects in which research Is likely to be of economic value to the industries of the dominion. This is a new departure in New Zealand. Candidates for this scholarship wll be able to make a choice from a list already published, or from some kindred subject which the candidate himself may choose. In this connection Mr Hogben pointed out to-day that the life history of food fishes, a subject which certain people are anxious to have included, Is, as a matter of fact, already included in the list. The research scholarship Is not a prize for research done, but it is designed to give an opportunity to qualify persons for making researches. It consists of £IOO a year, and all expenses in connection with lavatory, books of instructions, and necesary travelling disbursements. To win the scholarship candidates must have shown in their course that they have sufficient scientific training to enable them to undertake the research and they must have also shown themselves to be capable of doing original work.
