The control of Athletics
To the Editor. Sir, —The letter of "Impartial," appearing in your issue of yesterday, indicates that when the shaft strike* home, the victim feels it. Neither Mr Woods nor Mr Paape can feel flattered when my friend suggests that all correspondence emanating from them places these gentlemen within the category of the immoral; for such is what he says, in plain English. I fail to appreciate the process of reasoning by Which my friend arrives at the conclusion that all correspondence on this matter, other than that emanating from himself, is the outpour of a prejudicial mind. My friend enquires in what manner I can reconcile myself to the fact that "men of commonsense and understanding would disagree with Mr (!. \V. Woods and conduct themselves like idiots." We are at one hero—if nut so in anything else. I find it Impossible to conclude that the directorate have taken the position they have for no other reason than to differ with "Woods & Co." On the other hand the assumption must lie that these directors of the S.O.S. could come to no other conclusion than that it was an injudicious thing to continue as part and parcel of this body. As to Mr Corcoran'* "Impartial" articles, my friend apparently has sufficient interest in the matter to get copies of all these periodicals relating to the N.Z.A.U. The inference then, is palpable. "Impartial" is not aware whether Mr Woods has anything to do with the balance-sheet. Other tilings also, lie is palpably unaware of. Mr Woods, by not accepting Mr Paape'a challenge, lias placed himself in an unsatisfactory position. Mr Woods undoubtedly did not draw up the balance-sheet. He is, however, in a position .to explain several items in the balance-sheet, which would be none th« worse of explanation. I am not interested in this audit in a personal degree, hence Mr Woods is five pounds more In pocket As for my friend "Impartial," I suggest to him the desirability of acquainting himself with facts before appearing in print.—l am, etc., TRUTH. (This correspondence is now closed.— Ed. S.T.i
