School Committee Elections.
MONDAY, 27th APBIL. CLIFTON"—Fifty-four householders attended the annual meeting. T*ero were thirteen nominations for the ConunUtee, the following being elected:—Messrs LVsci:. Smith. Rose, Lindsay, Anderson, and Mofft-'. Mr Anderson was elected chairman, and Mr Dyson secretary. The Committee meet on the second Monday In the month. WINTON—Great Interest was taken In the annual meeting which was attended by more than Arty householders. The following gentlemen wore elected from eleven cam! I dates:—Mr .lames Watson. Mr V. Cole. Mr 0. D. Moore (chairman), Rev. Hooper. Mr R. .l.uuieson, Mr Hugh Taylor. Mr R. Wilson (secretary and treasurer). f.t'MSPEN'—The meeting ot householders was attended by sit members ot the outgoing committee and two others. The following Committee was elected:-R. Olliver. T. Menzlcs, A. Small (chairman and treasurer), and J. Robertson (secretary). On the motion of Mr J. t.ymburn, the retiring committee was thanked for its services. The Committee will meet on Monday before Board meeting in each month. GREKNHILLS—About twenty householders attended the annual meeting. Eleven nominations were received for the new Committee, the following being elected:—E. .1. Patterson (chairmani. A. McDonald. ,T. Wyath, John McLauchlan, D. Mclntvre, Jus. McLauchlan. and T. Gates (secretary and treasurer). WEST PLAIN'S—No Interest was taken in the election of a Committee, only six householders being present, and these were duly elected:— Messrs 0. Young (chairman), J. W. Fowler (see. r«tary), John Darragh, James Whyte, Robert Dyet ijour. ■. and Ralph Swale. Application Is to be made to the Hoard for carrying out a number of repairs to school buildings. Tho Committee commence operations with a fair credit balance.
GORE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL—The annual report stated. Inter alia, that:-The accommodation at the school is still taxed to Its utmost capacity, hut your Committee are looking forward tn the early erection of a Reparato High School, which will relieve the pressure to some extent. Your Committee took up tho matter of applying for the establishment of n High School early In the year, anil are pleased to ho able to State that they wero successful In their endeavours. The Education Hoard having recommended their establishment aud the Minister of education having expressed himself favourable to it. your Committee have no doubt that before next year the buildings will be well under way. The first step will be the election of governors which, we understand, the Minister will cause to be done at an early date. Some opposition was evinced t" the site provided by the Rorouch Council, but your Committee do not think that this feeling of opposition Is widespread. The general feeling of parents in the town and district Is one of Intense satisfaction that a Hlsh School Is to be established. The following Committee was elected:—Messrs Martin. Bonnet. Anderson. Turnbull. Bowler, Reed, Bust. Gibbs, and Droad. Mr A. Martin was re-elected chairman and Mr G. .1. Anderson secretary. Tho Committee will meet at the Athenaeum on the last Monday in each month. EAST GORE-The retiring Committee was reelected, as follows -.Messrs W. Boyne. W. He,.. Foweraker. A. Speden, A. Altkon, N. Rnbson, and A. Watt. UATAVRA—A paragraph In the annual report ■ends .■ follows:—"Your Committee are determined to push the matter of making this school a High School, especially seeing that Cor.' has decided to make theirs a District High School. We consider that, being one of the oldest and largest schools outside of Invercarglll, we are Justified in getting a High School. It will em-' brace a | ur ga district, taking In Ferndale. Wjiniumu, Tuturau, Wyndhnni. Edendale. aid Ota Creek. All these points can be worked very easily to this centre, the trains and roads suiting well. We need not point out what an advantage It would he to the children, bringing the higher education to their door." Only the required number (nine) being nominated for the Committee, the following were declared ,liily elected:—Messrs .1. Gait. .1. Lowdcn, It. Martin, K. Winning, A. Balneaves, I. Penny, J. Park, J. Keslln, and T. I. Bull. Mr J. Penny was elected chairman for the ensuing year. KN'APDALE—TweIve householders attended the meeting at Knapdale. Mr J. 11. 11. Gerkin presided. The following Committee was elected:— Messrs W. Irvine (chairman), J. 11. If. Cerkin. A. Death, T. Mallon. J. Tiskln, K.. McLeod. and I. Neil (secretary). WAIPAHI—OnIy three householders attended the meeting at Walpahi. so there was no election. WTNDHAM—At Wyudham only eight householders were present. Mr R. S. Drummond presiding. When the time for election came on, only three gentlemen definitely consented to stand. Alter some discussion on the apathy of the houseI generally in the important, cause of Education, it. was moved and carried "that the moetIng decline to elect a Committee, on account of tho little Interest shown in the matter by those directly concerned In the matter." The balancesheet, by the way, which had been previously adopted, showed a credit balance at date of I*9 9a 0.1, after meeting all liabilities. ItYAI, BUSH—At the n ting of householders of Ryal Bush the following gentlemen were elec- '■'■ :■ I'. Baldey, J. Fowler (chairman), Gilmour, James Hamilton, F. King, McCulloch (secretary), and Wishart. The retiring Committee's balance-sheet showed a ere/tit balance o over e.7 notwithstanding that they had spent ; considerable sum In Improvements during their term of office. BLUFF -There sa» a fair attendan •' at tin householders' meeting on Monday night .-.•id Mr i. McClure was voted to the chair. The report howed a very successful year's operations; 'bowed the present, roll number to be 290 and 'he average attendance 264. The Inspector's leports had been very satisfactory and the teachers cere to he complimented on the excellent results. The works carried out included levelling, asphalting and gravelling of school grounds, oxten ion .f girls' playsheds, etc. and the Education Board had purchased an adjoinlnc. section for a tenchresidence. Brass, C. T. Grant. Mr Matthews wuti appointed chairman and treasurer, and Mr C. T. Ilrant secretary. It. wan decided to put in an application for a new school, as the attendance has now Increased to sixteen, and likely to grow Mil! further. LONOBUSH—At this meeting the secretary's annual report was very satisfactory, showing a ?mall balance in hand and Indicating that. .1 end deal had been don" by way of linprovi inents during the year. Mr Colwlll was elected chairman and .Mr Hughes secretary for the Committee. IV OTHER PROVINCES. Per United Press Association. ELTHAM. April 2S. There was a record attendance of householders owing to friction between the Committee and headmaster, Mr T. Thomas. The old Committee who offered themselves for re-election think 11 change in the headmastersMp desirable. Other nine were nominated and, after a lively meeting, die old Committee was re-elected as follows: T. c. stamiers, C. A. Wilkinson, L. Hill. E. Parrott. P. A. Moore. O. Robinson, D. Cattanach, 1. WHLLINGTOX, April 2S At the election of school committees for lie city and suburbs, the general feeling was a-in the Blblo-ln-schools, and the majority of candidates advocating It were rejected. BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. AUCKLAND, April :.".. At the meeting of householders in the Grail..ll School District last night, the Rev. W. Gruv Dixon made a plea tor the Introduction of religious training in the State schools and moved - "That the incoming committee bo requested to recommend to the favourable* consideration of the hoard the question of the reading dally to the children a Bible lesson by one of the teachers."— Or Robertson seconded and the motion was declared carried hy 21 votes to nine.
