Noxious Weeds
(To the Editor.) Sir, —1 would like to draw attention to the above. Recently, at Otautau, some four settlers were fined for not clearing their weeds. Now why a few should be singled out from the rest certainly requires some explanation. I know a lot of properties in the same district on which are quantities of both thistles and ragwort, and in some cases no steps were taken to clear them. This savours strongly of injustice. I am afraid in some of these cases personal feeling Is allowed to creep in, otherwise there is something radically wrong in the administration of this Act. Of course the inspectors have to show that they are doing something for their salary, so pounce upon a few who are easiest got at and generally those who are doing their utmost to clear their weeds, while others in more remote parts get off scot free. As a fact those fined are all close to townships and nearly all on the main roads. Fortunately I have no noxious weeds. My sympathies arc all with the fellow that has. In this matter, as in all others, I am a lover of fair play.—l am, etc., A KEEN OBSERVER. Orepuki, 25th April.
