Fires.
TWO AT AUCKLAiSJ j. Per Unltsd Pre*« W n. AUCKLAND', April 27.. A Hre in Robert Farrell s bakery til Onehunga caused damage a mounting to £ISOO. There was no insi jranee. A fire occurred last nigh t in a board-ing-house in Harding street, owned by Mr Gleeson, and occupied 'by Air SykesThe building was gutted and the contents were destroyed, n iany boarders; leaving in their night rob es. The building and furniture vena insured, but tiie loss of furniture and boarders’ effects is estimated at from £2OO to £2OO.
ANOTHER AT ASHBURTON. POLICE MAKING ENQUIRIES. ASHBURTON, April 27. A fire commenced shortly after tlir ee o’clock tliis morning in a two-stoniy block of buildings in Havelock street, owned by Edwin Thomas, and occupied by G. Bundy (baker), Mrs Russelii (boardinghouse - keeper), and Morris Bros. (fishmongers.) Russell’s poi •- lion was wooden, the rest being ocf brick. Tiie Are is supposed to have started upstairs in the brf-ck portion: of the boardinghouse, the ’inmates of which barely escaped in their night apparel. Nothing was saved from Russell’s, but Bundy managedi to save apiano and other articles of furniture and effects. The efforts of tiie Fire Brigade were concentrated on saving the premises of Bros., and Thomas Bros.', products merchants, which they eventually succeeded in doing, Morris’ premises being badly damaged. TJfie boardinghouse was completely destroyed, and Bundy’s was badly gutted. The insurances were £3OO on Bundy’s premises ; £2OO on Morris’s, and £550 oa tiie boardinghouse, all in the Norwich Union, the owner (Edwin Thomas) losing more than £SOO over tho above total. Mrs Russell had £75 on her furniture in the Norwich, and £75 in the London, Liverpool and Globe. Tiie contents of Morris Bros,’ place wore not insured, and they estimate their loss at £3O. Bundy had a policy of £l6O on his furniture tn the National, and Thomas Bros., who estimate> their loss on building and stock atabout £SO. were insured in tha Sun office for £2OO. The police are making enquiries into the fire, seeing that several minoroutbreaks have occurred in the boardinghouse during the past twelvemonths, and also on account of numerous tires in the borough during the last three or four months.
