Borough Council Reports

Following are tho reports toi bo submitted to the Town Council at its meeting to-night : PUBLIC WORKS. Tho Committee recommend : —(.1) That' the engineer be instructed to' repair the footpath in Nith street, east side between Tny and Forth streets, when ho is satisfied the ground is consolidated. (2) That in connection with the gardener's application, the question of wages generally be held over for consideration until the annual estimates arc made in April. (3) That the fences at the sanitary depot bo repaired at a cost not exceeding £lO. (4) That Messrs Smith and Laing be informed that tho Council propose laying kerbing in Esk street when opportunity offers. (5) That sufficient grass seed ho purchased to sow lots where burned to the extent in all of about 20 acres in the Seaward Bush endowment. It is estimated that it will require 251b of cocksfoot and 4lbs of clover to the acre. (0) That tenders be supplied for the annual supplies to the Corporation. The Committee report :—(7) With reference to the petition from drapers, clothiers and mercers in Invercargill that a number of those signing can scarcely be classed as belonging to those trades, but if so there are an equal number of occupiers of shops in the town that can be similarly classed so that the petition does not represent the majority required ; one, Mr R. Gray, having sold his business, one has withdrawn her name from the petition, and one signing for the late closing is a wholesale manufacturer. (9) Having granted Messrs Kingsland and Ferguson permission to erect a stonemason's shed at the section at the corner of Leet and Deq streets subject to the right of the Council to order the removal of same on giving one month's notice. GAS AND WATER. The Committee recommend :—(1) That

the application from the gas stokers for 7 an increase in their wages be held over and considered when the estimates are being made in April next. (2) As the well at the abattoir requires deepening that the manager be authorised to employ the necessary labour. (3) That the Town Engineer report generally on. n.n additional water supply for the town with an estimate of the cost, including the propriety of securing n water supply from the New River at Dipton, or Dunsdale, or a further artesian supply. (4) That th» water engineer take steps to have the water tank thoroughly cleaned at the earliest opportunity. In) That tenders he invited up to 14th March for tile supply of gasworks coal and other supplies for the year ending 31st March, 1008. I'',) That the wages of fioorge Blackham, gas clerk, he increased to £1 per week. FINANCE. The Committee recommend —(1) That the application from Mr A. I.eader Williams for the use of the point room at the theatre he declined. (2) That the engineer and harbourmaster ho authorised to lay a .buoy in place of the warping dolphin southwest of the jetty.(3) That the town clerk ho authorised to invite tenders for printing the district electors rolls. The Committee report :—(4) With reference to the application from Mr J. C. Uowie for a refund of one month's insurance paid by him whilst engaged on extras in the theatre recommend that halt of the amount, viz., £-10 5s lOd, he paid. (5) Having examined accounts amounting to £10.91 4s Ad, and recommended that they he paid.
