NAPIER CALEDONIAN SPORTS. Per United Press Association. NAPIER. Feb. 13. The annual Caledonian sports meeting was held to-day. The weather was fine and the attendance large. In the running events F. Mclntyre, P. O’Shannessy. D. Sanson, A. Campbell and J. C. Boyd, won the 120, 220, 4-10 and 880 yards and the one mile handicaps respectively, all the Itimes being fast. The cycling races were well contested. In the one mile championship D. Wyatt beat G. Sutherland. In the handicaps the quarter-mile, one mile and two miles were won by P. Eddy, G. Sutherland and B. Simpson respectively. In, the piping events J. McKcchnie was the most successful, and in the dancing T. H. JcSerys and .1. McKechnie Shared thv prizes.

SMUGGLING TOBACCO. CHRISTCHURCH. Fob. 13. William Dawson, belonging to the Rimutaka, and James Duffy, were charged at the Magistrate's Court at Lyttelton with concealing a quantity of uncustomed tobacco and cigars. The Bench fined Dawson £27 and Du fly £lO ; but reduced these amounts to ono-fourth, making £6 15s and costs 7s in the case of DawSon, and £2 10s and costs 7s in Duffy’s case. SOUTH ISLAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH. Fob. 13. Up to the present 325 entries have been received for the adult matches at the South Island Rifle Association’s meeting to bo held next week, and 200 entries for the cadet competitions. It is anticipated that these numbers will be largely augmented by post entries, especially in the case of the cadets. W.C.T.U. CONVENTION. CHRISTCHURCH, Fob. 13. The twenty-second annual convention of the N.Z. Women's Christian Temperance Union opened this afternoon. when there was a large attendance of delegates. Miss Roberts presided. The Hon. Geo. Fowlds. Minister for Education, who was present, said that ho looked upon the work and workers of the Union as part of the educational system of NjZ. He had the greatest respect for the work which had' been done by the Union, not only in N.Z. but in other parts of the world. The Hon. G. J. Smith welcomed the delegates on behalf of the public of Christchurch, and addresses wore delivered by Bishop Julius and others. ' A letter of apology was read for the absence of the Mayor (Sir John Hall) from the convention. The letter stated that Sir John Hall took the deepest interest in the Union’s w-ork and would always remember with pleasure the work he did in conjunction with the Union in obtaining the parliamentary franchise for the women of N.Z. Miss Roberts said that the Union remembered with pleasure Sir John Hall’s help when they, were fighting for that just reform. The convention will continue throughout the week. ' THE EXHIBITION FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 13.

At the enquiry held to-day into the circumstances connected with the recent outbreak of lire at Sargood, Son and Ewen’s stall at the Exhibition the following verdict was returned j—“ This jury is of opinion that the fire was caused by the drapery coming into contact with the arm of the contour of the rheostat (an instrument for regulating electric currents), and we consider that the motor and the rheostat .should have been protected l;y perforated zinc. Wo wish to add a rider to the effect that great credit is duo to Mr D. C. Mclntyre and Gunner Rodgers for the prompt manner 111 which they dealt with the situation, and a further rider that the space in which the mechanism was worked was certainly too small.” GISBORNE HARBOUR. GISBORNE, Feb. 13. On the Gisborne Harbour Board the elective seats have been refilled by the retiring, members, all of whom have pledged themselves to support the construction of the outer harbour. The conference is likely to last a week. DUNEDIN'S CARNEGIE LIBRARY. DUNEDIN, Feb. 13. The foundation stone of the free public library for Dunedin was laid totday by the Mayor. Special reference was made to Mr Andrew Carnegie’s bounty in donating the sum of £IO,OOO for the institution. It is expected that in six months’ time the building will bo ready for furnishing.
