An interesting case was investigated by I lie Government apiarist in town on Tuesday. The hive in question had been transferred from a candle-box some time previously, and although carefully nursed,the number of bees dwindled noticeably. The day before Mr Hopkins inspected the hive a swarm issued from it. Left in the hive were a few handfuls of .bees and a good deal of drone brood, evidently iaid ‘by a worker-bee. From this one would conclude that the hive had been ([uecnlcss for some time, as that is the only condition under which a worker ever commences to lay eggs, which pnoduce* merely useless drones. The driver and guard who were adjudged to have been the cause of the railway collision at Matamau, Hawke’s Bay, during the holiday season, have, been discharged from the railway service.
