Stewart Island Notes.
On tile evening of 19th inst. a most successful concert was held in the Public Hull, Half-moon Bay, in aid of the funds of the recently formed Stewart Island Brass Baud. There was a large attendance and the function was thoroughly enjoyed by all present, The Rev. Mr Jamieson , made an excellent chairman. Songs were rendered by Mrs Blue, Misses Black and Watson and Messrs Millar, Young and Christie. Musical selections were given by Messrs Smith (violin). Hansen (piano), and Russell (piccolo). Mrs Blue kindly •acted as accompanist. The result iinancially will moan a substantial assistance to the band’s funds. The advent of a band at Stewart Island !is looked forward to with much pleasure by visitors to that popular [holiday resort, and is a step which deserves the best wishes of all concerned in the prosperity of the island.
During the. past year considerable improvements have been made in forming. and improving tracks, and the wharf at Golden Bay supplies a much fell. want. Those improvements have entailed the expenditure ol ! something dike £2OOO. i Mr C. R. Graves has recently had I erected a new drapery and fancy [goods establishment, which materially adds to the convenience of visitors and residents. I There is a movement towards the formatio'n of an esplanade, and. once this is an accomplished fact it wall prove .a great attraction. It is only reasonable to anticipate that In the near future there will also be a much improved steamer sendee, as the present arrangements will soon hardly be in keeping with the provisions now hieing 'vigorously pushed forward, by the energetic men who form the Stewart Island County Council.
