The Return of Dairy Cows
To the Editor. Sir,—in to-day’s .Times there appear;, a letter above the signature of Mr J. TV. F. Lopdeli referring to a paragraph that appeared on the 19th stating that XT' 7s Gd for a cow was considered a very high return for Mastcrton. Mr Lopdcll stated that this would he considered mediocre for Edcndale, where some herds have yielded as high as XI 15s per cow, and in one instance us much as XI I 17s. Now, Sir, Mataura can come one better than that, for the return for December for 34 Cows yielded 36,5921h of milk, giving 1427.37 n> of butter fnt. This at lOd per lb equals X|s9 9h 5d —an average of XI 15s per cow. Again, 14 cows yiefdod 17,596 Hi of milk, giving G50.861b of butter fat. This nt lOd per lb gives X 27 2s, averaging Xl‘ 19s per cow. Further, this is cn the basis of lOd per lb, whereas the supplier really gets lid per lb, because there is Id per lb bonus guaranteed nt the end of the year, and Edendale is based on lid per lb These figures I can vducli for, having received them from the secretary of the Mataura Dairy Factory.—! am, etc,, JOHN LOUDEN. Mataura, Jan. 22.
