South Canterbury’s Memorial

TIMARU, Feb. 23
The unveiling of a memorial to the South African troopers of South Canterbury took place this afternoon. The memorial consists of a marble figure of a trooper, 6ft. 6in. in height, upon a granite pedestal 10 feet high, standing on a gray stone stepped base. A suitable inscription and the names of 27 deceased troopers are engraved on tlio die. His Excellency the Governor drew off the veil and made a brief sympathetic speech. The, Mayor (Mr Craigie) gave a resume of the despatch of the contingents and expressed sympathy for those whose sons and friends had not returned. The Hon. Hall-Jones and Archdeacon Harper also spoke. Mr R. C. Tennent, treasurer to tho committee, formally handed over the memoi ial to the mayor. A feature of the proceedings was a parade of 370 cadets from the town and country schools. They were inspected by his Excellency after the ceremony and he expressed pleasure at their numbers and- bearing.
