PUKERAU.

A meeting of this branch was held last Monday night, Mr Scoular in; the chair, there being a* good attendance. * Considerable -discussion toolplace on the Premier's memorandum on child life. The chairman was of opinion that the "questionof supply--ing foundling institutions was out of the question, because we had no money to spare for the erection and equipment of such places, and because it ought to be the -duty of; those who undertake parentaf responsibilities to rear their own children without the assistance of the State. He that if the Premier's proposals were carried out in their entirety pauperism would be fostered, and that was v.cry undesirable. Independence rather, should 7be stimulated and encouraged. Mr Pullar though that the State should attend to tho proper training of nurses and midwives. The meeting, generally -waß of this' opinion;: and a resolution was passed to the effect, that the branch deprecated any State interference with the rearing of =children, but favoured the suitable training of nurses. The next business was an address by the organising secretary who touched on many subjects of interest to farmers. Several questions were asked regarding diseases in stock, and these being 'answered the meeting closed.
