Local Produce Market
The following is our weekly report on the condition of tho local grain market >- Oats. — There has been practically no business doing during the week, but enquiries are now on the market for shipments per s.s. Surrey, to load at the niuff* for South Africa about the ond of the month. Small orders have been received from Wellington and Auckland, but the quantities asked for do not affect tc any great extent the market in Southland. The cheap freights offering for London are inducing fanners to ship to that market on' consignment. A recent cable announced that 20,000 sacks had been sent from Melbourne to Lyttelton ior transhipment to London. Kvidently tho merchants in Victoria ure short of freights, ami the shipment to New 'Zealand shows that they can pay tho steamer charges lo New 'Zealand and the freight Home, and still land their oats iui London at about the same* rate as if the shipment had boon made from MeliKiunie. Locally, millers are still buying any A grade sam-plcs offeiingy Merchants are not keen to purchase any grade, and very few samples are offering from the country. Stocks nre still heavy at the Rluff and up-country stores. Local quotations are ls 'dd to 'Is Jd for B grade, at up-country. -tations, sacks extra. Other gratles are totally neglected.
