Per United Press Association.

CHRISTCHURCH, July 22

Indignation succeeded surprise when it became known at Lyttelton to-day that Dr Upham had been dismissed in connection with the Gracchus visit, as his extreme conscientiousness in discharging his duties is widely recognised. Dr Upham would divulge nothing. It is understood, however, that he iirst visited the .Gracchus in his private capacity as a. medical practitioner and diagnosed a caso on board as smallpox. He at once communicated, witln,.. Dr. Finch., Health Officer for, Canterbury, who agreed with his diagnosis, and took the precautions deemed necessary to deal with the situation.

Some excitement was caused at Lyttelton this morning when it became known that the steamers Taluno and Waikare hod been ordered into isolation on account of a case of sickness on board of the .former. The Lyttelton passengers had landed and the work of discharging had been begun when Dr Uphom, Health Officer, was called in to see Mrs Williams, forecabin stewardess of the Talune, who was ill. He deemed the case suspicious and ordered work on the vessel to be stopped ;^ no one ott board to be allowed to l<?ave and no one on shore to go. aboard. Ho communicated with Dr Finch, District Health Officer, who went to Lyttelton and shortly after 2 o'clock the embargo was romoved. M^ & Wil * liams is to bo isolated and sent to Wellington. •■ | k :> : . ■-■■
