The Lyddite Explosion

The enquiry* into tho terrible catastrophe in a shell factory in Woolwich arsenal on 19th .June, when an explosion of lyddite shells killed 11 and injured Hi workmen, has concluded. The explosion was attributed to tlie presence of a particle of grit in a shell in the process of removing the stick which forms thecavity for the exploder. Thirty 1"---im-h lyddite shells 'had been Idled in the factory during the night, ami after the explosion seven of these were missing. They were afterwards ncovored. several of them having demolished the walls of buildings at a distance from the factory, and killed and injured a number of people. Nunc of these shells were lilted with exploders. The jury returned a verdict that the cause of the explosion was unknown. They considered >ho buildings dangerously close together and that the space Viet ween them ought to be traversed by mounds. The abolition of piece work and independent inspection by the Home Olliee were recommended.
