The last meeting oKthe expiring Borough Council took place last night. The Mayor reviewed the work done during the last twelve months and spoke as to the progress the town had jnade. A number of important works were initiated and some of them completed during the year, the lighting of the borough with the electric light being! one of them.* Another important work being' done in connection with the borough is the Wainvuntu taxi race which, when completed, will be of great benefit to the western portion „of the town. The contractor haa a large number of men employed and is pushing on the work with all speed. The Council passed accounts to the amount of £666, the larger portion of which was a progress payment towards the tail race contract.

A local man secured the contract for the erection of the Athenaeum and Borough Council*' offices. He started work last week and by the completion of the building 'a long felt' want- will be rcuiovea". The freezing works company has offered to light it with electric light, and the Council resolved to nsk them to giye an estimate of the cost of doing so.
