N.Z. Band Contest.

[Per United Press Association.] New Plymouth, March 12. The Band contest opened yesterday with a garden party in the reci'eation grounds. It was a briUiant success ; 5000 being present. The massed bands played the selection, " Hearts and Homes," receiving hearty applause. The results of the solos ana other competitions were as follows : — Baritone solo— Dixon, Wellington Garrison, 77 points ; W. Yeoman, Dunedin Navals, 75 ; J. Dog, Kaikorai, 73. Flugel horn — J. Eades, Wellington Garrison, 75 ; W. Cooper, Denniston, 74 ; S. Greaves, Wanganui Garrison, 66. Trombone Trios— Kaikorai, 74 ; Master- j ton, 73 ; Denniston, 71. Quartettes — Wellington No. Q, 78 ; Kai- J korai No. 1, 78 : Dunedin No. 1, 77. E Flat Solo— G. Hartmann, Waihi, 77 ; G. McDonald, Taranaki, 76 ; W. Pittman, Palmerston North, 75. B Flat Solo — B. Hollboin, Palmerston North, 79 ; A. Baker, Wellington, 68 ; A. Gunner, Petone, 64. E Flat Horn Solo— McKersey, Dunedin Navals, 79 ; McNeil, Kaikorai, 78 ; Walmsley, Wellington Garrison, and Miller, Waihi, 75.

This afternoon the marching conteßt came off before the largest gathering ever known here, the gate money being £270. Thirteen bands competed, the results being as follows ; — Wanganui Garrison 164, Palmerston 141, Denniston 140, Taranaki Garrison 140, Hauraki 138, Wellington Garrison 136, Kaikorai 133, Masterton 133, N.E Valley 132, Ruahine 132, Waihi 128, Dunedin Navals 125, Granity Creek 125. The first test selection finished after midnight on Wednesday, but no results will be available till after the second test to-morrow night.
