Life and Death.
[Per United Press Association.] Wellington, March. 13. In tho Gazette tho Registrar-General publishes a report on the vital statistics from the four chief towns during last year. In Auckland there were 1448 births and 577 deaths; in Wellington, 132(3 and 508: in Christchurch, 1180 and 577; in Dunedin, 1280 and 803 ; the totals being 5284 births and 2275 deaths. 207 persons died from phthsis and 56 from other allied , diseases, this being 11 56 of the total deaths from all causes The deaths from heart disease numbered 172 ; cancer, 154 ; pneumonia, 135; bronchitis, 111 ; influenza, 74 ; apoplexy, 79 ; scarlet fever, 74. Ninety-four persons died violent deaths — 24 by drowning, 13 by burns and 10 by being run over. There wore 23 cases of suicide. The percentage of deaths of children under five to the total number oi deaths was— - Auckland, 30-15 ; Christchurch, 27-04 ,- Wellington, 32-28 ; Dunedin, 20 23. The total deaths under 5 years was 618, or 27*16 per cent of all deaths as against 574 and 27 18 for 1900. The deaths of persons 65 and upwards numbered 586 last year ; in 1900 they were 505.
