London, Jan. 27. De Wet's horses are in bad condition, as harassing of British columns compels him to be constantly on the move. Synman, when taken, had dynamite with which he intended to blow up the Nylstroom railway. A party of intelligence agents, while searching for the notorious traitor, train-wrecker, and ex-guardsman, Jack Hindon, brought about the skirmish which resulted in the capture of General Ben Viljoen and two of his aides. A trooper who deserted from Nesbitt's Horse was captured and shot. All Natal rebels will, in future, be tried by court martial instead of by a special civil court. Three hundred prisoners at St. Helena, including a number of large landholders, have volunteered for military service in South Africa. Fully a thousand would gladly serve, Sydney, Jan. 28. Professor Nood, of Sydney University, a member of the Anti-War Society, addressing the Political Labour League, urged that Britain should abandon the demand for the unconditional surrender of the Boers ; a; demand it was sought to justify by saying it was supported unanimously by Australia. He urged that the terms suggested by Lord Kitchener be offered to the Boers. The various races in South Africa should be brought together and given self-government similar to Australia, which would be the truest patriotism and the truest Imperialism.
