(Per Press Association. ) AUCKLAND, Dec. 17The recommendations of the Conciliation Board in the coal miners dispute at Hikuraugi have been accepted by both parties and the dispute settled. WELLINGTON, Dec. 17. A month having elapsed since the recommendation of the Conciliation Board in the plasterere' dispute was filed it will now operate and be enforceable in the same manner as an industrial agreement duly executed and filed by the parties. It will have effect for two years. This is the first instance of the kind under the new Act. At a meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals it was reported that quite a trade is done in decrepit horses, which are smuggled away into the back country, where they are used for "packing." Some shocking details were narrated of the cruelties to which these animals are subjected. It was confessed that the Society was powerless. The Ageut-Geueral telegraphs : — " Butter, 110s ; in good demand. There ia no alteration in tho cheese market. Flax : good sales of Wellington at £23 per ton ; Manila, £30. The auction sales closed this week with weak demand." NAPIER, Dec. 17. Henry Fred Herald has been committed for trial at Hastings on a charge of stabbing Jerome Creedon. DUNEDIN, Dec. 17. George Slater, aged 25, -was killed at Macraes to-day. Three horses from a waggon were startled while at a water trough and bolted towards the waggon. Deceased was holding one of the horses in the waggon, lest it should take fright, when one of the loose horses collided with him. He fell and it is supposed that his head came into contact with a stone as he died half an hour afterwards. The application for a new trial in the case in which Miss McKenzie recovered £800 damages from the Roslyn Tram Company is to be abandoned and the damages and costs will be paid.
