AFTER THE EMPEROR'S PEACE PROPOSALS SUDDEN OUTBURST OF FIGHTING ALLIES TAKE THE FIELD A PLUCKY MACPHERSON TEN THOUSAND CHINESE DETECTED MARCHING ON PEKIN Loxdox, Dec. 17. Received 18th, 12.10 a.m. It is explained that owing to a recrudescence of anarchy around Pekin Count Waldersee has allotted spheres of pacification to the allied expeditionary forces which they have unanimously accepted. The British force, under Major Tulloch, reconnoitred eight miles north -east of Pekin, and encountered fire from smokeless powder. The assailants were not discovered. Tulloch, ten miles further on, subsequently attacked a Boxer stronghold. Lieut. Macpherson scaled the wall by means of a ladder, jumped down on the other side and held the Boxers at bay, thus enabling others to scale the wall and storm the place. Macpherson escaped scathless. Forty Boxers •wore killed and a number brought to Pekin. The French force, operating to tlve southward and westward, came in contact with the vanguard of 10,000 Chinese who were marching on Pekin.
