RECRUITING FOR S.A. POLICE IN ENGLAND. LORD ROBERTS' OPINION OF THE QUEENSLANDERS. London, Nov. 13. Received 14th, 4.21 p.m. Hundreds of tons of gifts to the .soldiers have accumulated at Pretoria and have not been delivered by the War Office owing to the peregrinations of the men. The bulk of the other presents, sent through the post otfice, have been delivered. General Settle heavily engaged the Boers southwards of Kimberley with success, many prisoners being taken. General Douglas has captured Ventersdorp, which latterly has been the enemy's supply base, together with 21 Boers and a quantity of cattle. The N.S.W. Bushmen and New Zealanders did splendid work. A police patrol at Petrusburg fought 100 Boers for some hours until their ammunition was exhausted. Seven were captured, stripped of their rifles and valuables and released. The Queensland Bushmen at Pienars River, captured six Boers, two of whom were badly wounded. Nov. 14. Received 15th, 0.11 a.m. Miss Roberts is progressing favourably. Private Kluffer, South Australia, has died of wounds. The Government is recruiting 1000 constabulary in tho United Kingdom for the Transvaal and Orange colonies. Received 15th, 0.27 a.m. O. Bottom, New Zealand Rough Riders, died of wounds at Kimberley. Brisbane, Nov. 14. Received 15th, 0.11 a.m. Lord Roberts, in cabling that a detachment of the Queenslanders has left for home, says : — "I am sorry to lose such useful men. I was always aole to repose confidence in the Queensland contingents without ever finding it misplaced."
