Serious Charges Against Bank of N.Z Officers

£4732 ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN STOLEN. (By Telegraph.) Christchcrch, Aug. 3. This morning Alex. Y. Hay and Wm. Allan, manager aud teller respectively of the Bank of New Zealand at Rangiora, were airested on a charge of having stolen 'mm the bank various sums amounting to £4732. i The accused, who had been suspended for a fortnight and were prepared for the charges, i were brought up immediately before Justices, when Alexander Yeuog Hay was charged that he did on January 29th, 1894, at Rangiora, ste*l the sum of £80 5s 2d aod on February 26'h, 1900, the sum of £6S 15*. He was also jointly charged with William i Allan with having on divers dates between ' January Ist, 1896, and July lObh, 1900, stolen i various earns, amounting in the wnote to £4583 18s 6d. Mr Fisher, who appeared for the bank applied for a remand until Tuesday. Mr Helmore, who appeared for Allan and represented Mr Harper, counsel for A. Y. Hay, bad no objection to offer and asked for b*il, whioh was fixed on the first two charges on accused's own recognisances of £150 and two sureties of £100 each, and on the main charge on the two accused's reoognisances of £1000 each and two sureties of £500 each. The total amount of bail waß £4350 and the sureties were immediately forthcoming.
