New Zealand [Peb Pbess Association.] WELLINGTON, July 11. Mr E. J. Finch has been appointed inspector in New Zealand for the Bank of New South Webs, in place of the late Mr Rhind. For about seven years Mr Jfmch has been inspector in Queensland and previously was manager of the Dunedin branch. He is to be succeeded in Queensland by Mr Gilbert King, who was inspector in New Zealand during Mr Rhind’s illness. , The principal object of Colonel Penton s visit to Westport is to confer with Captain Browne, of H M.S. Tauranga, as to the best means of defending the harbour. When asked to-night whether he could throw any further light on the statement of the New Zealand correspondent of the Melbourne Age as to the proposed German annexation of Samoa Mr Seddon said he knew rumours had been current, but the Government bad leceived no official information on the subject. . . Ryan, who was defendant in the action to recover a wager last week, writes to the Press Association that the cheque for L 4 12s fid mentioned in the evidence was given over a previous transaction and had nothing to do with the case except that it was not paid, and the wager was scratched in consequence. DUNEDIN, July 11. John Ryley applied for his discharge from bankruptcy. Mr Sim urged that all possible allegations of offences under the Bankruptcy Act had been charged and enquired in by a iury, who acquitted the debtor. The Judge remarked that that acquittal was in respect of criminal liability and that only. Application could be made again in three months. At the annual meeting of the U.J.U. Mr Gourley said the new course at VVingatui was ready and plans were on the table for a grandstand and buildings. He suggested that the new committee should make a final effort to come to terms with the Forbury Park Co. to remain at Forbury.
