Waianiwa Sports

Tho annual sports meeting of the Waianiwa Athletic Society was held on the 30th ult. in a paddock kindly lent for the occasion by Mr T. Wilson. There was a large attendance notwithstanding the counter attractions of an excursion to Colao and Orepuki. The officials were most attentive to their duties and well deserved the hearty commendation bestowed on them. Every race was well contested and great interest was taken in the sawing and chopping competitions and the district handicap race. The dancing was excellent: the music being provided by Mr J. Boyd (violin) and by Mr K. Cameron whose performances on the pipes enlivened the proceedings. A ball held in the evening was well attended; Mr P. McDermid was M.C. and the musicians Messrs Boyd and Stevenson. The following is the prize list of the sports. 100 Yards maiden race—l, E. Reidy ; 2, W R McAuley. Running high leap—D. McKay and E. Reidy tied at 4ft. Ilin. Throwing the hammer —1, F. Forde (109 ft. 9Jin); 2, E. Tobin (6ft.), 106 ft. 9Jin. Handicap race (120 yards)—l, C. Evans; 2, T. Clarke; 3, R. Batt.
