AUSTRALIA v. ESSEX.
The Essex County eleven are Owen, Kortwright, Bull, Lucas, Mead, Rickett, Carpenter, Bawtry, R\issell, McGahoy and Perry. The attendance is good, the wr ather splendid, and the wicket lively. Essex, winning the toss, went in first and were all out for 166. Giffen did some deadly bowling against' which McGnhey and" Perry made a plucky stand.
Received, 15th, 7 p.m. The principal scorers for Essex wore MeGahey, at Kelly, b Trumble, 20 ; Perrin, o Kelly, b Trumble, 35 ; Lucas, b Gif fen, 46.
At the close of the day's play the Australians had lost 4 wickets for 78, lUrling, c Lucas, b Meade, 21 ; Gregory (not out) 21.
Sb. James Gazette aays the result of the match at Sheffield Park shows that England Will hive litt!e difficulty ia retaining her supremacy iii the cricket field. Received 16th, 1 a.m. Essex showed only mediocre form at the wickets, the exceptions being Perrin, an amateur colt, and Lucas, who showed some of his old form with the bat. Giffun took 3 wickets, Trumble 4 and Jonea & McKibbin was not tried. The fielding of the Australians showed improvement. Gregory played freely.but the others showed uaution, Meade's bowling being dangerous.
