The Brunner Calamity

Wellington, April I. The Premier has received the following telegram from Mr Anthony Hordern or Sydney : — " Have instructed bankers to hand you LIOO. Convey deep sympathy to afflicted." Mr Seddon has aho received cablegrams from the Premiers of Victoria and South Australia sympathising with New Zealand in respect to the disaster. At a meeting of the Belief Fun! Committee this moraihg it was reported that money was coming in freely. Over LSOO has been received by the comonUto© alone, apart from subscriptions sent direct and Evening Post funds. The N.Z. L. and M.A. Co have given L35, and Levin and Co L2T». The Mayor ot Brunnerton telegraphed that a large amount of moo ning clothing wa!i required, and it was decided to forward a quantity. It was also decided to communicate with the Relief Committees in other centres with a view of coming to an arrangement as to the future management and distribution of the fund.
Yesterday Mr W. Young received the following contributions to the fund i—Garrison Band, Ll2 16s Id ; City Bind, Ll3 7« 3d ; employes of W. Guthrie and Co. at Invercargill, Mataura, and Gore, L5 7s.
Some of the local canvassers for the Brunner Relief Fund having been asked the p sition the unfortunate men occupied with regard to insurance under the Em* ployers' Liability Act, and not being clear on the matter, owing to the meagre information to hand on the point, Mr Young, secretary to the committee, has telegraphed to the Mayor of Brunnerton for full particulars. It will probably be found that tb<3 men's lives were not insured, at lease not with the Accident Insurance Co.
The Bluff Naval Artillery Band gave % promenade concert on the a. 8. Binffahire on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance of the public. The band per*, formed a nice selectiou of music, and dadoing was indulged in daring the evening. Captain Coull and his officers did all in their power for the band and the pronvsnad era. A collection taken up in aid of the Brunner relief fund was generously responded to. The Mataura Borough Council has taken up the work of collecting subscriptions fur the sufferers by the Brunner disaster. The body of Kent, the last to be ri« covered from the mine, was brought to the surface on Tuesday morning.
