Te Anau
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). It seems that the tourist traffic has commenced earlier this season than last, and the more widely known our fine spring seasons become the earlier shall we have visitors to enjoy them. This week we have had another party visiting these lakes and enjoying to the full the beauties they afford. I think it is time now that the County Council were repairing the roads. Two men sent up for two months or even for one month could effect a vast improvement. There is the part also at Centre H4l station, where the road is shifted to a more round-about and difficult route. The alteration renders an extra bridge necessary. As there is a vote of L5OO for this road most of the pressing work should be in hand without delay. Year by year votes are passed for this work, but where is the money expended ’ Some suggest not on the Te Anau road at all but on roads nearer Riverton. If this is so the sooner we get a “J. J. Ramsay” to stir up our counciilois to their duty the better will it be for all who have to travel by coach or trap to these parts. Another matter I must complain about is the railway mismanagement that obtains at Mossburn. If the Commissioners cannot pay a stationmaster to look after things properly why not close the branch altogether. 5s a week is said to be paid to somebody to open and shut the goodshed morning and evening. All the day Tom, Dick, and Harry may ream round at their own sweet will and rummage amongst goods and parcels. The result is that up-country orders frequently arrive short. A paper parcel never comes through without all its corners being torn. Every item in it has the look of careless examination and it is only by a lucky chance if two or three articles do not fall out altogether. Goods in boxes are not secure. The boxes get broken. He that orders timber must now and again be satisfied with 90 feet instead of 100, and so on. I hope it is only necessary thus to draw attention to these things to have the wrong righted. Nov. 3rd.
